“You can’t hit people,” I say. “Especially not here. And
especially not with chairs.” There’s no reaction beyond the
deepening of her glare. “You especially can’t hit your daddy.”
The angry eyes flicker. “I don’t have a daddy.” She delivers

“You do now. From this moment on, you’re to think of me as

I feel her muscles tense. She wants me to let her go. I grip

“You mean beat me?” Her voice is shaking, but still there are
no tears.
